Spirit of MMS
The spirit of Magi Mystery School is contained and discovered within two culture’s greetings/farewells (Shalom and Aloha) and the importance of nature.
Shalom
Shalom is a Hebrew word that means peace, healing, and wholeness; it means to be fulfilled or complete. “…. consider the word SHaLOM (peace). The root letters shin_lamed_mem speak of perfect completion and wholeness. On the achetypal level, Kabbalah views the letter Shin as representing ESH (fire) whereas the letter Mem stands for Mayim (water). The middle letter Lamed means "learning" but equally suggests melamed (teaching). The letter Vav means hook and literally hooks together and unites the primordial opposites FIRE and WATER in perfect harmony that we may learn from their peaceful co-existence and teach this message. As such the word SHaLOM embodies the quintessence of peace.” (http://www.ruach.net/gateopen.html)
As we can see, shalom is born of the fire letter (shin) and the water letter (mem), so it is the marriage of opposites, meaning that peace and oneness can come only from inclusion and the interpenetration of both, the union of inner and outer, of personal and communal, of movement and rest, of yin and yang, of heart and mind. Shalom is similar to an Aramaic word that Jesus used: “selama.”
The Aloha Spirit
It is a matter of no small importance in the rating of a people to take account of their disposition toward nature….
Of all the greetings and partings found spread throughout the earth, I believe that the Hawaiians aloha, along with shalom, has the most depth and multitude of feeling and meaning. It is a right brain solution to a left-brain manipulated and controlled world. Aloha means that I acknowledge the ‘spark or sun of God’ within you as you acknowledge the ‘spark or sun’ within me. Alo means ‘in the presence of’ or ‘to be with’ and Ha is ‘the breath of life.’ Aloha Spirit is the spirit of oneness and the love that is the breath of the soul. It is a loving state of mind where hate has no resting place. To the Hawaiians, aloha represents love. All of life is founded on this love, the love of the sea, the love of the sky and the love of the ‘aina (land), and all its inhabitants.
Ha is the secret key within aloha. It is the breath that we all share. It is the life-force and consciousness that connects us all. It carries our words, words that may create or destroy throughout the world. To the wise ones of old, words were no less powerful than deeds.
Breath is life, a life that is pure. But the loving breath that enters us may leave our bodies tainted and shallow with various materialistic thoughts that decay and separate people from the essence of the land and sea. Let your breath be pure. The following may help you embrace the Aloha Spirit:
To bring aloha into your life, you must practice the aloha spirit. One way of describing these qualities is using the very letters of the word A-L-O-H-A.
Akahai (Gentleness) Be loving by showing others kindness. Helping not only those close to you, but those who are not. This connects you to the ‘aina.
Lokahi (Unity) Be in harmony with yourself, your family, all people, and the world. Feel the interconnections of everything. To find pleasure in life, bring pleasure into life.
‘Olu‘olu (Pleasantness) Be a pleasant person who gets along with all people and the ‘aina. You must forgive those who you feel have wronged you—including yourself.
Ha‘aha‘a (Modesty) Be humble about yourself and not egotistical or self-centered. Be concerned of other’s feelings as much as your own.
Ahonui (Patience) Be happy with what we have now rather than impatient with what we want in the future.
Once you master all of these and bring pono (balance) into your life, you must bring awareness of aloha to others and help them achieve the same balance, for the final part of living aloha is to share the breath of life with everything. The more we do this the more aloha there is in the world and the more aloha there is in ourselves.
The Importance of Nature
In the light of the past and the present unbridled destruction of the earth’s biosphere, it is essential for all people to acknowledge that nature is divine—a living existence in which everything has life and consciousness shared in common with all human beings.
There is one key element and one very important concept that permeates the belief and philosophy of this website, indigenous cultures and Divine Humanity. This is the belief in the importance of nature; not the dominance and/or stewardship of it as believed by the Christian Religion, but a partnership and a oneness with nature—a nature that is divine, alive, conscious and responsive. Nature is the holy grail of healing and the secret to the maintenance of wholeness and wellness for all individuals, communities and nations. Nature is without a doubt Kulana Huli Honua (’foundation for seeking wisdom’).
Nature is extremely important to the Magi and Shaman. In my opinion, religion and spiritual teachings can never be separated from nature—the primary teacher is always nature. Religion and spiritual studies are supposed to explore and seek knowledge about the mysteries of life, death and creation. This seeking of truth, about these mysteries and the pursuit of a fulfilled life and happiness, cannot be found in a book, no matter if some human says it is the ‘word of God;’ nor can it be found within human made structures—it can only be found in nature and our relationship to the earth and to the heavens. The true foundation of any church or religious structure is the green earth with the roof being the blue sky above.
